Role Model Awards

2009 Award Winners

MALE WINNER;
Abdi Jama - Great Britain Men's Basketball team

Abdi Jama was awared this year's male Role Model Award for various reasons. Making his debut at the Paralympic games in Beijing 2008, GBR team member 26-year-old Abdi Jama came away with a bronze medal in the men's wheelchair basketball event. We have given this award to Abdi as his current achievements are spectacular. We were very pleased as Abdi joined us all the way from Liverpool to pick up the award only a few days after a tour from Turkey.

Abdi Jama - Great Britian's Silver Medalist in the Beijing Paralympics

Born in Somalia and now living in Liverpool, Abdi trains with the Wolverhampton Rhinos under coach Murray Treseder and cites Muhammad Ali as his sporting hero. Having sustained a spinal injury following a fall from a window, it has done nothing to discourage the newcomer to sport, and he also enjoys bowling and football alongside basketball. Abdi felt very pleased and "honoured" to have received the award.

In basketball he plays the position of guard, and has competed in the World and European Championships 2006/07 in Amsterdam, Germany and in Manchester, where he has won both bronze and silver medals. He was honoured with the best newcomer award at the 13th annual British Wheelchair Sports Awards held in Essex in 2008.

We would like to wish Abdi Jama and the whole Great Britain men's Basketball team all the best for the London 2012 Paralympics. Gold medal on home soil? YES WE CAN!

We were very pleased to have invited Sagal and her managers on the night, even better, they had enjoyed themselves greatly and "receiving the award was a bonus" for Sagal.

It is Sagal’s role to make the services of Merseyside Fire Rescue Service accessible to the ethnic minority communities by overcoming the barriers of language, culture and religion. Her main responsibilities are to promote fire safety awareness in Somali community to reduce the risk of fires and equip these vulnerable groups with fire safety education, at the same time building bridges between the fire service and Somali community. WHY DO WE NEED A ROLE MODEL?
